Tips for Dentures: What You Might Want to Omit From Your Diet

Dentures are one of the quickest and most effective methods of replacing a lot of teeth at once, capable of making an incredible difference in the lives of people with rampant tooth loss. They can allow you to eat a much more expansive diet, or to eat the foods that you did before much more easily.

However, there are some things that you might still have to exclude from your diet for the sake of your dentures, or that this prosthetic could struggle to process. Here are a few examples.

Sticky Foods

Sticky foods, like caramel, taffy, or certain candies, can easily cling to dentures, making them difficult to clean and potentially dislodging them. These foods can also create a breeding ground for bacteria, increasing the risk of gum infections and decay in any remaining natural teeth. The sticky residue can be difficult to remove and might require extra cleaning efforts, putting unnecessary wear on your dentures.

Hard Foods

Foods like nuts, hard candies, and even certain raw vegetables like carrots or corn on the cob can be too tough for dentures to handle. Biting into hard foods can cause dentures to crack or break, leading to costly repairs. Even if the dentures don’t break, the pressure exerted on your gums and jaw can cause soreness or discomfort. It’s best to avoid these foods or cut them into small, manageable pieces.

Foods with Small Seeds

Foods like sesame seeds, popcorn, or seeded fruits can be troublesome. The tiny seeds can easily get trapped under dentures, causing irritation and even sores on the gums. Once lodged, these seeds can be difficult to remove, leading to discomfort and potential inflammation. Additionally, these small particles can affect the fit of your dentures, causing them to become unstable or loose.

Avoiding these foods can help protect your dentures, ensuring they remain in good condition and that your gums stay healthy and comfortable.
