Sedation DentistryMidlothian, TX

Dental anxiety is real, it’s common, and it keeps millions of people from getting the care they need.

At Legacy Dentistry in Midlothian, TX, Dr. Nguyen specializes in treating anxious patients and has made sedation dentistry a cornerstone of the practice. From mild relaxation to deep sedation, we have options that make dental care accessible, comfortable, and even pleasant for every patient.

If fear has kept you out of the dental chair, this is where that changes.

A Practice Built For Anxious Patients

Dr. Nguyen doesn’t just tolerate anxious patients. He seeks them out. His own deep empathy for discomfort and anxiety drives a practice-wide commitment to making every visit as stress-free as possible.

From the moment you walk in, you’ll notice the difference. Freshly brewed coffee, a calm and welcoming environment, massage chairs and TVs in every treatment room, and a team trained to work gently and patiently with patients who have had difficult experiences elsewhere.

Sedation is the clinical extension of that same commitment to your comfort.

Sedation Options For Every Level Of Anxiety

Legacy Dentistry offers the full spectrum of sedation options, allowing Dr. Nguyen to match the level of sedation precisely to your needs.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is inhaled through a small nasal mask and produces a relaxed, slightly euphoric sensation within minutes. You remain fully conscious and responsive, and the effects wear off almost immediately after the mask is removed. You can drive yourself home. Nitrous oxide is complimentary at Legacy Dentistry, even for routine procedures like cleanings and checkups.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescription medication before your appointment. By the time you arrive, you’ll feel deeply relaxed and drowsy. You remain conscious but will likely remember little of the procedure. You’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. Oral sedation is ideal for patients with moderate anxiety or those undergoing longer procedures.

IV Sedation

IV sedation delivers medication directly into the bloodstream, producing a deeper, more controlled level of sedation that takes effect almost immediately. Patients are in a deeply relaxed, sleep-like state and typically have little to no memory of the procedure. Dr. Nguyen monitors you closely throughout and can adjust the level of sedation in real time. IV sedation is the preferred option for patients with significant anxiety, dental phobia, or those undergoing complex or lengthy treatment.

Comfort During Complex & Lengthy Procedures

Sedation isn’t just for anxious patients. It’s also invaluable for patients undergoing lengthy or complex procedures who want to complete more treatment in fewer visits.

With IV sedation, Dr. Nguyen can often complete multiple procedures in a single appointment that would otherwise require several separate visits. This is more efficient, more comfortable, and allows your recovery to happen once rather than multiple times.

Patients who combine sedation with comprehensive treatment often describe the experience as waking up with their dental work already done. For those who have been putting off extensive treatment, this approach removes every barrier.

Safety & Monitoring Throughout

Sedation at Legacy Dentistry is administered and monitored with the highest standards of safety. Dr. Nguyen has advanced training in sedation dentistry and follows rigorous protocols throughout every sedated procedure.

Our safety measures include:

  • Comprehensive health history review before any sedation appointment
  • Vital sign monitoring throughout the procedure
  • Emergency equipment and reversal agents are on hand at all times
  • Detailed post-sedation care instructions are provided before you leave
  • Follow-up contact to ensure your recovery is progressing well

Your safety is never compromised in pursuit of comfort. Both are equally non-negotiable at Legacy Dentistry.

Ideal Candidates For Sedation

Sedation dentistry is appropriate for a wide range of patients and situations.

You may benefit from sedation if you:

  • Experience anxiety or fear related to dental treatment
  • Have had traumatic dental experiences in the past
  • Have a strong gag reflex that interferes with treatment
  • Are highly sensitive to sounds, smells, or sensations in the dental environment
  • Need extensive treatment that would otherwise require multiple appointments
  • Have difficulty sitting still or keeping your mouth open for extended periods
  • Simply want a more relaxed, comfortable experience regardless of anxiety level

What To Expect Before & After

  • Before your sedation appointment: You’ll receive detailed preparation instructions that may include fasting guidelines, medication adjustments, and arrangements for a driver for oral or IV sedation. Following these instructions carefully ensures your safety and the effectiveness of your sedation.
  • After your appointment: Recovery varies by sedation type. Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes. Oral and IV sedation require the remainder of the day to rest, with most patients feeling fully normal by the following morning.

Dr. Nguyen will contact you after your appointment to check on your recovery and answer any questions.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

As you prepare to undergo sedation dentistry, we understand you likely have many questions about the process. Whether it is wanting to know more about the safety of a particular form of sedation, how to prepare, or what you can expect afterward, our team at Legacy Dentistry is here to answer your questions and address any concerns. Below is a list of questions on sedation dentistry. If you do not see your question listed below, please feel free to contact us and schedule an appointment.

Yes, sedation dentistry is completely safe and effective when administered by a professional. Depending on the type of sedation you will receive (i.e., nitrous oxide, oral conscious, or IV), you can expect a relaxing and positive experience. Naturally, before receiving any type of sedation, though, you will need to schedule a consultation with a member of our team to discuss your eligibility, as not all patients are considered qualified candidates for sedation.

Most people can expect to be eligible for sedation dentistry; however, there are criteria most dentists tend to follow when determining whether someone is a candidate, such as:

  • Mild, moderate, or severe dental anxiety
  • Past traumatic experience with dental work
  • Difficulty sitting still for prolonged periods of time
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Strong gag reflex
  • Multiple dental treatments to be performed during one appointment
  • Individuals who have physical or cognitive limitations that can make dental work and procedures riskier

If you are pregnant, taking certain medications, or have various medical conditions, you’ll need to discuss this with our team. This will help us determine if you should receive sedation for your upcoming procedure or wait.

This is dependent upon the type of sedation you will receive. With nitrous oxide, the effects begin to dissipate immediately once the gas has been turned off. With oral conscious and IV sedation, it is necessary that you have someone escort you to and from your dental appointment, as it will take time for the effects to fully wear off. With IV sedation, you will likely feel groggy the remainder of the day and will need to go home and rest.

Should you feel nauseous or experience more serious symptoms, make sure to contact our office as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, knowing whether your dental insurance company will agree to pay for sedation dentistry is not possible until you review your policy and/or call and speak to a representative. Each insurer is different, so if you are unsure of what to ask or how to go about getting the information you need, our team will be happy to work with your insurance company on your behalf. It is possible that they will cover at least a portion of the total cost, but you should determine if there will be any out-of-pocket expenses before agreeing to move forward with treatment.
