Does Cosmetic Dentistry Hurt?

If you’ve been considering a cosmetic dentistry treatment but are holding off due to a fear of pain or discomfort, you may be surprised to learn that these procedures typically do not hurt. Here’s why when it comes to improving your smile, there’s nothing to be afraid of!

Elective Procedures & Pain

Typically, when you get a cosmetic dentistry treatment it is considered elective, and these types of treatments are usually not painful. In some cases, such as with professional whitening, you may experience a little bit of sensitivity for a few days after treatment.

Getting veneers requires your dentist to remove a very thin layer of enamel, so your mouth will be numbed for that portion of the procedure. You may be a little sensitive until you get your permanent veneers placed, but as with whitening that sensitivity can easily be alleviated with OTC pain relievers.

Dental bonding is completely painless, however if your dentist does need to smooth any rough edges first, you may require numbing for that. The same applies to metal-free restorations. This treatment involves your dentist removing your old metal fillings and replacing them with composite resin, so you may need to be numbed during the removal portion. Still, these should not result in a lot of discomfort afterwards and any lingering sensitivity can be easily treated with OTC pain reliever as well.

Sedation Dentistry

If you are nervous or anxious about any type of dental treatment (including your routine biannual exam and cleaning) your dentist offers sedation dentistry options to help you feel comfortable and calm during your appointment. This can even be used for elective cosmetic treatments, so if you’re still nervous about your visit, speak to your dentist in advance about whether you qualify for this option.

Remember, cosmetic dentistry procedures are not typically painful, but your dentist will numb your mouth for any treatments that could cause discomfort. Following your appointment, any lingering sensitivity should be easily treated with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
